Tea Talk

Tea. The small, simple, warm comfort that helps bring joy, peace and soothes the soul. Tea drinking is an integral part of our daily lives and it can be hard to imagine that actually during the early 16th century it was classed as a luxury item that only the rich could afford. But in the late 18th century England, the cost of tea began to fall enabling middle-class society affordability for it. When people drank tea, they were expected to possess certain manners and behave in a particular way. Soon, drinking tea became a domestic ritual among families, colleagues, and friends who were just wealthy enough to afford it, which also increased demand. The association between tea and respectability became so ingrained in both British and Irish culture that it reached a point where it could not go out of fashion•. Hence why you're still able to cradle that steaming cup right now! When travelling to Turkey you will come across the tulip-shaped tea glasses glistening with a dark red tea

The Perfect Pilav

Turkish food, need I say more. Turkish cuisine plays major importance in Turkish culture and customs, once you are served food you will hear the words 'Afiyet Olsun' which echos the Italian saying 'Bon Appetit!' literally meaning enjoy your meal, and this is said by the Turks with genuine affection as they really want you to savour and enjoy every mouthful. Sharing food in Turkey is a big act of being generous and looking after those around them, followed by doing good deeds in the eyes of their religion, and plays a great importance to Turkish culture and customs. When I first was welcomed into my husbands family one of the first words I learnt was 'Ye, ye', meaning  eat eat ! They literally want you to eat and it pleases them to see you enjoying the food they have prepared, so if you're becoming apart of a Turkish family then be prepared to bring your appetite.  So a staple in Turkish cuisine I would say is rice (pilav). It is served with many dishes suc

Language

Growing up my favourite lesson at school was English, I loved language and how it could be used artfully to evoke emotions and reactions. I had a niche for writing poetry and short stories, at the age of 11 I had one of my poems chosen to be published in a primary poetry school book which seasoned my love for creative writing and language. Even as a child the sight and smell of a book shop or library would be my idea of heaven, and that still stands to this day. Standing in a building with shelves upon shelves filled to the brim of books, each with a new adventure waiting or new knowledge to be learned about the world it was what made me long to have my own book one day stand on these shelves for others to delve into. Again this dream of mine still stands and has become partly true, after completing my degree I decided to publish a short story and it has helped me to have a taste of what it is like to publish your completed work.  Coming back to a language I have always been interest

A rather accurate Ottoman wife representation of myself.  Except for the maid. I'd rather love an assistant thinking about it. Hello dearest readers!  Welcome to 'Turk Wife Life', a blog dedicated to journaling what life is like being married to my Turkish husband, providing insight into cultural styles, traditions, language, cuisine, history, horticulture and art. My name is Lucy and I am from Kent, England. I am a mother to three, and hold a BA Hons Degree in English Literature and Creative Writing and am an English Language teacher.  I enjoy reading, creative writing, crochet, cooking and history.  So, enough about me. I bet you're wondering why I've started a blog all because I am married to someone born from another country, it's highly common to see interracial marriages these days. Well, the main reason for beginning this blog is because I love to write! Being married to someone who is from across the globe you learn a lot about the world and what it has
